                                                                 OF NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY

 

I want to look at nature through the keyhole of my spirit. I have never pursued the documentary value of images but rather their artistic value. With this work I want to vindicate a more artistic vision of nature photography. In my opinion, its documentary function, which is necessary but not exclusive, has been abused. I don't care if what I'm photographing is a gannet or a flamingo, what matters to me is that the bird contains a poetic charge. I don't care if the tree is a cork oak or a poplar, what matters to me is conveying its effort to grow. If I photograph a cloud, I want the wind to be intuited. With photography I try to communicate the same impression, the same emotion that reality is producing in me, I am concerned with photographing what I feel more than what I see.

 

I seek the spirit of matter, the creative energy that I can feel both in a tree bursting with life and in a flower that withers, in the robustness of a lava formation and in the evanescence of a cloud formation, in the apotheosis of a sunset and in the discreet branch. When I feel, I feel …I feel in the solitude of the tree, in the leaf that refuses to fall, in the light that is dying... Photographing what I identify with is what will allow me to create artistic images: those that are part of me. To feel yourself in others is to make them yours. Art is a search for identity.

UNA VISIÓN INTIMISTA  DE LA FOTOGRAFÍA DE LA NATURALEZA

 

Quiero mirar la naturaleza por el ojo de la cerradura de mí espíritu.Nunca he perseguido el valor documental de las imágenes sino su valor artístico. Quiero con esta obra reivindicar una visión más artística de la fotografía de la naturaleza.En mi opinión se ha abusado de su función documental, necesaria por otra parte, pero no por ello excluyente.No me interesa si lo que estoy fotografiando es un alcatraz o un flamenco, lo que me importa es que el pájaro contenga una carga poética.No me interesa si el árbol es un alcornoque o un álamo, lo que me importa transmitir es su esfuerzo por crecer.Si fotografió una nube quiero que se intuya el viento. Con la fotografía trato de comunicar la misma impresión, la misma emoción que me está produciendo la realidad; me preocupa fotografiar lo que siento más que lo que veo.

Busco el espíritu de la materia, la energía creadora que puedo sentir tanto en un árbol que estalla de vida como en una flor que se marchita, en la robustez de una formación de lava como en la evanescencia de una formación de nubes, en la apoteosis de una atardecer como en la discreta rama.Al sentir me siento: me siento en la soledad del árbol, en la hoja que se resiste a caer, en la luz que agoniza...Fotografiar aquello con lo que me identifico, es lo que me permitirá crear imágenes artísticas: aquéllas que forman parte de mí. Sentirte en lo demás es hacerlo tuyo. El arte es búsqueda de identidad.

My works are full of irony. I cultivate satire and uncompromising dark humor; I'm nothing more than a nihilist who makes up for my lack of hope with sarcasm. As a good comedian, I don't take anything seriously, least of all myself.

 

I have a profound admiration for objects, and I play with them; I manipulate them until I find unusual combinations that no one has ever seen before. As Juan Gelman said: "Poetry is when two words meet for the first time," or as in my case, "when two objects meet for the first time."


When I create, I pursue a single goal: to impact the viewer through originality. To achieve this, I use resources such as metaphor, paradox, irony, and contrast; resources without which poetic power would not exist. I eagerly seek "surprise."

Mis obras están cargadas de ironías. Cultivo la sátira y el humor negro sin concesiones, no soy más que un nihilista que suplo mi falta de esperanza con sarcasmos. Como buen humorista no me tomo nada en serio y menos que nada a mi mismo.

Siento una profunda admiración hacia los objetos, y con ellos juego; los manipulo hasta encontrar uniones insólitas que nadie había visto antes. Como dijo Juan Gelman: “La poesía es cuando dos palabras se encuentran por primera vez"o como en mi caso “cuando dos objetos se encuentran por primera vez.”

Al crear persigo un único fin: impactar en el espectador a través de la originalidad. Para lo cual me valgo de recursos como la metáfora, la paradoja, la ironía, el contraste; recursos sin los cuales no existiría la carga poética. Busco con ahínco “la sorpresa.”

           INTERVIEW WITH JAVIER SANZ ABOUT HIS SCULPTURE PROJECT IN FUERTEVENTURA

 

Tell me a little about your new work. Why a monolith?

 

I really liked the film 2001, and I've always had a strong fascination with monoliths. They're elegant, solemn, powerful, and their meaning is so open, so broad. I like monoliths because they connect you with mystery, they encourage reflection, they inspire transcendence.

 

What motivated you to choose Fuerteventura and no other places to place it?

 

The minimalist aesthetic of its landscape perfectly matches the minimalist aesthetic of my monolith. Two aesthetics that enhance and complement each other in a mysterious symbiosis. What I seek is a fusion between sculpture and landscape, forming a unity.

Art, as Cesar Manrique well knew, can greatly enhance a given place, especially when it has as much potential as this one.

 

Is the sculpture's location very important?  

 

Without a doubt. This monolith demands a spectacular, majestic location, because it couldn't engage with the mystery from a roundabout. Sculptures in roundabouts become costume jewelry.

 

Do you think there's a lack of ambitious works of art like this in Fuerteventura?

 

Yes, because I think that compared to Lanzarote, which is full of Cesar Manrique's masterpieces, Fuerteventura is a bit self-conscious; it seems like its poor sister. I think this island has a demand for this type of art so there isn't such an artistic imbalance compared to its neighboring island.

Fuerteventura deserves a tribute.

 

I love the explanation you just gave; I also believe we're Lanzarote's poor sister.

What's the first word that comes to mind when someone mentions Fuerteventura?

 

Freedom. Fuerteventura is another name for my freedom.

 

 Why do you like Fuerteventura so much?

 

 I like Fuerteventura because it's dominated by four elements that fascinate me: the sea, the wind, the space, and the light. These four ingredients, united on such an encompassing island, give me an intoxicating sense of freedom.

I also feel here that I don't feel the need to leave; it's as if this island has kidnapped me, and I suffer from Stockholm syndrome: "How good my kidnapper is." But in this case, he's actually good.

I think it's something that has happened to many people.

 

Have you never felt claustrophobic when living on an island?

 

The truth is, no, because I don't experience the sea as a limit, but as a liberation.

In Fuerteventura, I experience a very curious paradox: such a limited island provokes such a lack of limits.

 

When was the first time you set foot on this land?

 

In 2020, I first went to Gran Canaria, but I immediately felt repulsed. Too much tourism, too much crowding in the south of the island reminded me of Benidorm, or Torremolinos. So I decided to go to Fuerteventura, which promised more, but I never imagined it would promise so much.

 

How did you feel when you arrived here?

 

Fascinated.

 

How great...

 

I felt like this was my place in the world, my place. Sometimes I think it's as if this island had been waiting for me.

 

Do you see yourself living here?

 

I don't know if I'll ever live, but I'll always come back.

 

Cesar Manrique was a visionary for Lanzarote.

Do you think you could be a visionary for Fuerteventura?

 

Although it sounds pretentious of me to say it, I think so. I want to achieve for Fuerteventura what César Manrique achieved for Lanzarote: to create art that engages in dialogue with the island.

 

Can you think of a tourism slogan for this island?

 

“Fuerteventura: Nothing will distract you from the essential.”

 

Who is Javier Sanz? How would you define yourself?

 

As a man who asks questions and finds no answers. As a man who incessantly interrogates mystery.

The poet Antonin Artaud was right when he said: “To live is nothing other than to burn with questions.”

 

Do you think your works are your response to the frustration your questions create?

 

No; my works are never answers, they are questions without answers. I embrace Giacometti's words: “A sculpture should not be an object but a question.”

 

Are you more interested in questions than answers?

 

Much more so; they are more poetic, especially when we can't find the answers. It's like magic, you're always asking yourself: How will they do it? If you discover the trick, the magic ends. If you discover the answer, the poetry ends. Borges once said: "The resolution of a mystery is less than the mystery."

Questions are aspirations, which leave room for daydreams; wasn't the moon more poetic when we hadn't reached it? If we are sacred in anything, it's for our questions, not our answers. As Carl Sagan said: "We are the medium by which the universe questions itself." We are stardust contemplating stars.

 

You know what makes me most happy about all this? Listening to you and understanding you...

 

Well, it comforts me because when someone dedicates themselves to art, they have a very strong desire to be understood... but... who doesn't?

 

What do you aim for with this work?

 

To radiate mystery and serve as an incentive for the viewer to question it.

 

Your goal is ambitious.

What is it that you never want others to feel about your art?

 

Indifference... whether they love it or hate it, but indifference is oblivion.

 

What makes a sculpture interesting to you?

 

It enhances the mystery of a place, making it as enigmatic as possible.

 

If you want to contribute anything else, something you think is important to say...

 

I want to give back to this land what it has given me.

Hablame un poco de tu nueva obra ¿Por qué́ un monolito?

 

A mí me ha gustado mucho la película 2001 y esa fascinación por los monolitos siempre la he tenido muy presente. Son elegantes, solemnes, potentes y su significado esta tan abierto, puede ser tan amplio. Me gustan los monolitos porque te conectan con el misterio, incitan a la reflexión, a la trascendencia.

 

¿Qué es lo que te ha motivado a elegir Fuerteventura y no otros lugares para colocarlo?

 

La estética minimalista de su paisaje que casa a la perfección con la estética minimalista de mi monolito. Dos estéticas que se potencian y se complementan mutuamente en una misteriosa simbiosis.Lo que yo busco es una fusión entre la escultura y el paisaje, que constituya una unidad.

El arte como sabía muy bien Cesar Manrique puede potenciar mucho un determinado lugar, sobre todo cuando tiene tanto potencial como este.

  

¿La ubicación de la escultura es muy importante?

 

Sin lugar a duda. Este monolito pide una ubicación espectacular, majestuosa, porqué no podría dialogar con el misterio desde una rotonda. Las esculturas en las rotondas se convierten en bisutería.

 

¿Crees que faltan obras de arte ambiciosas como esta en Fuerteventura?

 

Sí, porque yo creo que teniendo enfrente a Lanzarote que está llena de obras maestras de Cesar Manrique Fuerteventura esta como un poco acomplejada, parece como su hermana pobre. Creo que esta isla tiene demanda de este tipo de arte para que no haya tanto desequilibrio artístico con respecto a su isla vecina.

Fuerteventura se merece un homenaje.

 

Me encanta la explicación que acabas de dar; yo también creo que somos la hermana pobre de Lanzarote.

¿Cuál es la primera palabra que se te viene a la cabeza cuando te nombran Fuerteventura?

 

Libertad. Fuerteventura es otro de los nombres de mi libertad.

 

¿Por qué te gusta tanto Fuerteventura?

 

Me gusta Fuerteventura porque en ella predominan cuatro elementos que me fascinan: el mar, el viento, el espacio y la luz; estos cuatro ingredientes unidos en una isla tan abarcable me producen una embriagadora sensación de libertad.

Me siento también aquí́ que no siento la necesidad de salir; es como si esta isla me tuviese secuestrado y padezco el síndrome de Estocolmo “qué bueno es mi secuestrador”; pero es que realmente, en este caso es bueno.

Creo que es algo que le ha pasado a mucha gente.

 

Nunca has sentido claustrofobia al vivir en una isla.

 

La verdad es que no, porque no siento el mar como un límite sino como una liberación.

En Fuerteventura siento una paradoja muy curiosa: como una isla tan limitada me provoca tanta ausencia de límites.

 

 ¿Cuándo fue la primera vez que pisaste esta tierra?

 

En el  año 2020. Primero fui a Gran Canaria, pero enseguida sentí́ un rechazo, demasiado turismo, demasiada aglomeración en el sur de la isla me recordaba a “Benidorm” a “Torremolinos” a sí que decidí́ irme a Fuerteventura que prometía más pero nunca me imaginé que prometiese tanto.

 

¿Al llegar aquí́ como te sentiste?

 

Fascinado.

 

Qué bueno....

 

Sentí́ que este era mi lugar en el mundo, mi sitio. A veces pienso que es como si esta isla me hubiese estado esperando.

 

¿Te ves viviendo aquí?

 

No sé si viviendo, pero siempre volviendo.

 

Cesar Manrique fue un visionario para Lanzarote.

¿Tú crees que podrías ser un visionario para Fuerteventura?

 

Aunque suene pretencioso por mi parte decirlo, yo creo que sí. Quiero conseguir para Fuerteventura lo que Cesar Manrique consiguió́ para Lanzarote, crear un arte que dialogue con la isla.

 

¿Se te ocurre algún lema turístico para esta isla?

 

 “Fuerteventura: Nada te distraerá́ de lo esencial.”

 

¿Quién es Javier Sanz? ¿Cómo te definirías a ti mismo?

 

Como un hombre que se hace preguntas y no encuentra respuestas. Como un hombre que incesantemente interroga al misterio.

Acertó el poeta Antonin Artaud cuando afirmo: “Vivir no es otra cosa que arder en preguntas”

 

¿Crees que tus obras son tu respuesta a la frustración que te crean tus preguntas?

 

No; mis obras no son nunca respuestas, son preguntas sin respuesta. Hago mías las palabras de Giacometti : “Una escultura no debe ser un objeto sino una interrogación.”

 

¿Te interesan más las preguntas que las respuestas?

 

Mucho más, son más poéticas sobre todo cuando no encontramos las respuestas. Es como en la magia siempre te estas preguntando ¿Cómo lo harán? Si descubres el truco acaba la magia. Si descubres la respuesta termina la poesía. Ya lo dijo Borges: “La resolución de un misterio es inferior al misterio.”

Las preguntas son aspiraciones, que dejan margen a las ensoñaciones; acaso no era más poética la luna cuando no la habíamos alcanzado. Si en algo somos sagrados es por nuestras preguntas no por nuestras respuestas. Como dijo Carl Sagan: “Somos el medio por el cual el universo se interroga así́ mismo”. Somos polvo de estrellas contemplando estrellas.

 

Sabes lo que me alegra más de todo esto, escucharte y entenderte...

 

Pues me reconforta oírlo porque cuando alguien se dedica al arte tiene una demanda muy fuerte de ser entendido... pero... ¿Quién no la tiene?

 

¿Qué pretendes con esta obra?

 

Irradiar misterio y que sirva de acicate para que el espectador se interrogue sobre el mismo.

 

Tu finalidad es ambiciosa.

 

Te voy a responder a la gallega ¿Por qué́ no?

 

¿Qué es lo que jamás quieres que sientan por tu arte?

 

Indiferencia... que lo amen o que lo odien, pero la indiferencia es el olvido.

 

¿Qué es lo que hace para ti interesante a una escultura?

 

Que potencie el misterio de un lugar, que lo vuelva en la medida de lo posible más enigmático si cabe.

 

Si quieres aportarnos alguna cosa más, algo que tu creas importante decir...

 

Quiero devolverle a esta tierra lo que me ha dado.
